Vaquero Football Team Awards
Click on the tab below to see a description of each of the Vaquero Football Team Awards. Not every award is given every season, and some were only used for a short time, but this will give you an idea of what each award entails.
Most Valuable Player
This award is to honor the player whose performance on the field was most significant in the success of the team for the year.
The Most Valuable Player of the Year Plaque honors “Charlie”. Charlie joined our program in the early 90’s as a volunteer. He was a friend, father figure, grand-father figure to everyone in our program. He was the face of Irvine Football in the 90’s. After his passing it was decided to name this award after him since he was most valuable to all of us in the program that he touched. It is a great honor to have your name on Charlie’s plaque.
Captian’s Award
The Captain award winner is selected because he provided crucial leadership to the team throughout the off- season, spring, summer and season. He leads by example. This is voted on by the team.
Practice Player of the Year
The Practice Player of the Year winner is honored for being totally involved in many areas of practice and always doing it at a very high level.
The practice player of the year award is named in honor of Vince Giuliano. Vince was in the football class of 1984. After graduating from Irvine and UCI, Vince died in a tragic accident while kayaking. We named this award for Vince since he was one of those players who possessed average athleticism but became a starter because of his great work ethic in practice. It is a great honor to have your name on Vince’s plaque.
Coaches Award
This Coaches Award winner is selected as the role model for the Irvine football program. We are telling all of our young players in the program to approach football like him.
The Coaches Award now honors Bobby Hatfield. Bobby was a young man who only spent two years in our football program before he lost his life in an automobile accident. In that short time at Irvine he had a lasting impact on all of us at Irvine High. He lived Honorable, Reliable, Respectful, Committed, Team Oriented in his daily life. We could think of no one more worthy of asking our players to be like than Bobby. It is a great honor to have your name on Bobby’s plaque.
Teammates For Life Award
The Teammates For Life award goes to the player who has proven to be an exceptionally selfless individual throughout his four years in the program. The recipient has consistently demonstrated that he is willing to do anything to make the program and his teammates better without asking for anything in return.
The Teammates for Life award honors Coach Terry Henigan. Coach Henigan spent 29 years as the head football coach at Irvine High School with the number one goal of helping young men become better people after four years in the program. His willingness to always make decisions based on what was in the best interest of the football program as a whole defined the concept of Teammates for Life. Coach Henigan’s selflessness is truly admirable and it is a great honor for the individuals whose names go on this plaque.
